Introduction
It is the typical hills getaway with a dose of spice–hike to the Nilgiris and get into the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) toy train, which is listed as an UNESCO heritage, and ride it through tea valleys and foggy tunnels.
You will get to Ooty and Coonoor perspectives, have a taste of the estate tea, and have plenty of time along with the toy train in four leisurely days and remain easy to transfer between Bengaluru and Ooty.
Nilgiri Toy Train Essentials (routes, tickets, seats)
Route and segments
- Mettupalayam (MTP) – Coonoor (ONR): Rack-and-pinion mountain section which is the most scenic one with bridges, tunnels and steep climbs.
- Coonoor (ONR) – Udagamandalam/Ooty (UAM): Smoother slopes with tea gardens, quaint stations, such as Wellington and Lovedale.
Typical daily windows (subject to change; check IRCTC)
- Morning MTP – Ooty service having a planned stop/altered at Coonoor.
- Other daytime shuttle services between Ooty – Coonoor.
Classes and ball park fees (2025 indicative)
- First Class (FC, reserved): ₹900–1,500 per seat (varies by segment/season).
- Second Sitting (2S, reserved): ₹120–450 per seat.
- Unreserved/day counters are usually a rare sight but sell out- target reserved tickets.
Booking
- Train on IRCTC by using the station codes: MTP (Mettupalayam), ONR (Coonoor), UAM (Udagamandalam).
- Open the chart promptly (120 days typical to most trains, NMR quotas may vary).
- In case you fail to get full-route, take Coonoor – Ooty seats and do the rack part by road.
Luggage
- Small backpacks are worn on the head; big suitcases are cumbersome. When you are driving, take big bags by car and board the train light.
Seat tips
- Window seats are everything. Perspectives alternate with curves, however the valley side varies with the climb- enjoy either side instead of pursuing one side as the best.
