Introduction
This 3-day itinerary is a combination of the three South Indian classics of Coimbatore with easy accessibility, tea-planet such as 40 iconic hairpins with highlands at Valparai, and Kerala with Athirapally-Vazhachal waterfalls by the Sholayar forest road.
It is picturesque, can be done in a long weekend and suits couples, families and self drive tourists who prefer green scenery to the hectic itinerary.
Route overview and best time
- Normal distance (east – west): Coimbatore-Pollachi-Aliyar dam-Valparai-Sholayar-Malakkappara-Vazhachal-Atirapally-(Optional)Chalakudy/Kochi.
- Character of drive: Smooth plains till Aliyar, then a spectacular ghat comprising 40 hairpins, which are numbered; the forest link day is subjected to serious day-time regulations and speed warnings.
Best months:
- Oct-Jan: clear, cool nights–superior.
- Feb-May: Hot afternoons; get up early in the morning.
- Jun-Sep (monsoon): Wet and theatrical; the monsoon is at its highest, waterfalls are at their best, but there are downpours, leeches in the tracks and route warnin

Day 1: Coimbatore → Valparai (tea views and hairpins)

- 40 hairpins: Climber: Ascend slowly; in switchbacks allow buses/trucks room. The traditional photo stop is the View Point of Loam (~HP 9).
- Cheque-in and lunch: Have your base either Valparai town (easy food) or an estate-fringe homestay (quieter).
- Afternoon loop: Select 2-3 sedate stops.
| Stop (Valparai side) | Why it’s nice | Time needed |
|---|---|---|

- Malakkakka cheque-post: Cheque and pass; do not delay in core sections.
- Vazhachal Falls: First fall on the way down– wide falls and pathways in the shade.
- Athirapaly falls: The star of Kerala; there are two observation points- top view and the long stairway leading to the bottom which is bordered by boulders (open in pleasant weather).
Suggested flow
- 8:00-11.30 AM: Picturesque wood ride with brief photo stops where it is safe.
- 12:00-1:30 PM: Lunch near Athirapally.

Day 3: Athirapally day plan + return options
- Sunrise break: Silent scenes out of the higher platforms before the crowds.
- Athirapally base walk (second light): In case you did not do the base last (yesterday), do it now; take water and have shoes with a grip.
- Charpa Falls: Roadside falls between the two major falls- best in monsoon/post monsoon.
Add‑ons (pick one):
- Thumboormuzhi–Ezhattumugham riverside walkways (towards Chalakudy).
- Short birding drive at first light along the river road (no off‑trail wandering).
Lunch and departure:
- Return to Coimbatore, via Angamaly-Palakkad (6-7 hrs), or
- Go on to Kochi/Thrissur in case of a trip to the west.
Where to stay: zones and budgets
| Valparai town/market | Walk to eateries, easy check‑in | ₹1,500–2,500 |
| Estate‑fringe (Stanmore/Sholayar) | Quieter, tea views | ₹1,800–3,200 |
| Athirapally falls road | Near ticketed gates, river breeze | ₹3,000–5,500 |
| Chalakudy town | Value, food options | ₹1,800–3,200 |
Packing, safety and monsoon notes
- Pack light: dry coat, light rain jacket (Jun-Sep), gripped shoe, refillable bottle, snacks, phone dry pouch, small trash bag.
- Ghat driving: When down-hilly, gear lower; hairpin, no cut. First in priority are uphill cars.
- Forest etiquette Zero litter, no loud music, no feeding wildlife, no river dips in fast-flow stretches.
- Waterfalls: There is a reason why there is a barrier- wet rocks are not as slippery as they look; do not take a selfie by the sides.
- Leeches (monsoon): Shoes can be used over them but with a dab of sanitizer/salt, they can be removed without any pain.
- Network: Jio/Airtel works well in cities; spotty in estates and forest–pin maps offline.
Conclusion
You will ascend storybook hairpins of Valparai, ride a teenage of tea and rain forest and stand before the roar of Athirapally. Early start, observe the times of the forest, two or three unhurried stops a day, and you will go home with a camera full of greens–and with a mind refreshed to peaceful.
