Getting There from Thiruvananthapuram
- Self-drive: From city centre, the common route is Thampanoor/Peroorkada – Nedumangad – Vithura – Kallar (check-post) – Ponmudi. Expect 2-2.5 hours each way with a tea stop. Start by 6:00-6:30 AM to beat traffic and morning fog on bends.
- KSRTC buses: A few direct services may run on weekends/season. On regular days, take frequent KSRTC buses to Vithura or Kallar, then a connecting bus/jeep to Ponmudi. Check the official KSRTC app/site on the day.
- Cabs: City cabs do day trips. Negotiate for a full-day 8-10 hour package that includes waiting time at the top and the falls.
Tip: Fuel up in the city. On the hill section there are no pumps.
Entry Rules, Check‑post Timings and Fees

- Check-post: All vehicles and visitors enter via Kallar Forest Check-post. Vehicle numbers are managed to protect the hill. On peak weekends, they may temporarily hold vehicles below or shift to a shuttle system. Carry a valid ID.
- Timings: Generally morning to late afternoon; last entry is often around 4:00 PM, and return down before evening. Exact windows can change by season and local order. Reach early to avoid being turned back after the cap is hit.
- Fees: Expect a per-person entry fee, plus a nominal vehicle/parking charge; cameras may have a small fee. Meenmutty Falls trek has a separate guide/entry fee. Rates change–confirm at the gate or Kerala Eco-Tourism site.
Eligibility and restrictions:
- No alcohol, plastic littering, or drone flying inside the eco-sensitive area.
- Respect barricades and rope lines on the grass slopes–these protect fragile shola-grassland habitat.
- Pets are typically not permitted past the check-post.

- Water: Carry your own bottles and refill where possible. Avoid single-use plastic; bring back all waste.
- Stay options: Day trips are enough, but KTDC Golden Peak and a few homestays around Vithura/Bonacaud exist if you wish to slow down.
Road, Weather and Safety Tips
- Driving: The ghat has roughly 22 hairpin bends. Use low gear while descending; don’t ride brakes. Honk lightly before blind curves; give way to uphill traffic.
- Fog and wind: Mist can reduce visibility to a few metres. Use hazard lights only when stopped; otherwise keep low beam on and speed low.
- Wildlife and monkeys: Do not feed monkeys; keep snacks inside bags. Elephants may move near Kallar–obey forest staff and do not stop if a roadblock is announced.
- Monsoon: Trails become slippery; leeches are common. Wear shoes with grip, carry a compact umbrella/poncho, and keep a spare pair of socks.
- Mobile network: Jio and BSNL are usually better; Airtel can be patchy at the top. Download offline maps before the climb.
- Emergency: Save helplines–Dial 112 for emergency; Forest/Eco-Tourism numbers are displayed at Kallar.
