Introduction
Meghamalai or Highwavy is an uninhabited, green plateau in the Tamil Nadu district of Theni, presently included in the landscape of Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger reserve. Imagine tea gardens, sparkling dams, and viewpoints on the cliffs that overlook Cumbum Valley.
It remains cool and pleasant, birds sing all around, and on clear days, nights are starry. The routes are small yet gratifying and hence it is a beautiful couple, family and photo lover 2 day outing out of Madurai.
This manual makes it achievable: the optimal way to get there, where to take a breakfast and fuel, how to deal with permits on the forest gate, and an hour-by-hour schedule of realism. You can also see cost, the main viewpoints with the most appropriate time to visit, clean list of do/don’t list which work in a tiger-reserve buffer zone.
Getting There and Best Time
In Madurai, the standard route is Madurai -Theni -Chinnamanur – Varusanadu ghat road -Meghamalai (Upper camp/tea estates). Anticipate 160-140 km in all and 4-5 hours with a breakfast pause.
The final 35-40 km will ascend with 18-20 hairpin turns, and therefore, maintain low speeds and give way to uphill traffic. The last is one-lane with turning estate, it helps with a honk at the turns where one cannot see.
The blue sky with cool nights are in the months between October and March. It is warmer in the day but still comfortable in the evenings on top in April-May.
The northeast monsoon (October-December) is characterised by short and heavy rainfall; fog may obscure the views, but the tea slopes appear to be green. When it pours or in the woods, it happens that some inner tracks are shut- some backup plans are necessary and never ignore what the cheque-posts are saying to you.
