Introduction
The Pine Forest at Kodaikanal is the simple type of nature that most families need, tall pines, soft light and a needles carpet that makes feet sound as they walk. Mornings of the weekdays are the best moments: the air is not so hot, the sun rays are filtered to take photos, the number of stalls and almost no buses are reduced.
Here is the plan of how to have that quiet hour–where to park and take a little walk around the loop, which keeps you close to the road but makes you think you are in the forest, the actual risk of the leeches by season, and the stuff to expect in toilet, ticket purchasing and traffic movement.
Getting There and Best Time
In the Kodaikanal Lake/bus stand area, drive 5-7km towards Moir point/ Pillar Rocks (15- 20 minutes with traffic). The primary Pine Forest bay is on your left after the Golf course stretch and before you get to the Guna Caves/Pillar Rocks.
Parking attendants tend to manoeuvre vehicles by directly driving into assigned spots in the shoulder. In town, autos are readily available to hire and you do not need to drive the car on your own, fix waiting charges beforehand.
Nothing is nicer in the forest than in October to March, crisly lit mornings and soft breeze. It is warmer but pleasant till 10:00 AM when it is April-May.
In the southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon (June-September and October-December), there will be mist, wet ground and the occasional showers. Mornings of weekdays are silent between 7.30 AM and 10.00 AM; after 10.30 AM, school parties, tourist vans, etc. start to come particularly during a holiday season.

Prices, Timings, Crowd Pattern and Safety Notes
The pine grove does not have an official entrance/exit, so the time of the day is the best and evenings are packed. During weekdays, it is a slow stream until 10:30 AM and on weekends/holidays, there are continuous crowds between 10:30 AM and 5:00 PM.
In the event of a taxi loop in which you are going around Moir Point-Guna Caves-Pillar Rocks, request your taxi driver to make Pine Forest the first place to visit. Leech risk is not severe, seasonal and very mild. Pine needle beds are drier than the shola trails hence the leeches can hardly be found around the main loop during winter and summer.
During monsoon (June-September and wet spells of oct-Dec), they are found in the wet hollows and around the mossy logs. The main part of it is solved with closed shoes and ankle-length socks; conduct a fast cheque of your ankle before getting into the car again. In case of attaching, do not pull off–a shake of salt/water mixture or a starting slide is all right, and then get the area cleaned.
Do’s and Don’ts for First‑Timers
| Do | Don’t |
|---|---|
| Visit on a weekday morning (7:30–10:00 AM) for calm light and parking | Don’t run down slopes—needles are slick |
| Wear closed shoes/socks; check ankles in monsoon | Don’t enter fenced cave areas or off‑limits sections |
| Keep your loop within earshot of the road | Don’t litter or light cigarettes in the grove |
| Use UPI but keep small cash for parking/toilets | Don’t engage horses/photographers without agreeing price first |
| Carry a light jacket and water; use toilets before the walk | Don’t climb dead logs or stack pines for photos |
FAQs
Is Kodaikanal Pine Forest an entry ticket?
- No grove admission ticket. You can pay little parking and toilet fees. Adjacent attractions such as Pillar Rocks are charged.
What duration do we want to plan the visit?
- A loop walk and photographs should take approximately 45-60 minutes, more in combination with Guna Caves or Pillar Rocks.
Is it stroller-friendly?
- The floor is not even and level; a stroller is better than a carrier. The marginalised parking roads are less steep to the elderly.
Are leeches a big issue?
- And only in damp months and in low depressions. The main loop does not require more than closed shoes and socks; after the walk, the ankle should be checked in a few minutes.
